Our Earth Day celebration this year, themed "Planet vs. Plastics," was a resounding success, filled with engaging activities that not only educated but also empowered local children to take an active role in preserving the planet. Held with the support of generous sponsors, this event brought together the community to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of sustainability.
From the moment the event began, children were immersed in a series of exciting and educational activities. One of the highlights was the litter picking activity, where the young participants grabbed their gloves and bags to help clean up the local environment. This hands-on experience taught them the impact of litter on their surroundings, whilst also fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in keeping the Earth clean.
Another popular activity was crafting with plastic waste where children used discarded plastics to create innovative and colourful art pieces. It was amazing to see how plastic waste could be transformed into something beautiful and useful. By repurposing materials the kids not only had fun but also learned about recycling and reusing, two key concepts in the fight against plastic pollution.
The event was made possible thanks to the generous contributions from our sponsors. Delta Palms Spar and the Department of Environmental Protection played a crucial role in supporting the celebration. Delta Palms Spar, located in Maun, not only helped with the logistics but also provided food to keep everyone energized throughout the day. The Haskins group provided refuse plastics for the litter-picking activity, ensuring that the children had all the materials needed to make a real impact on their local environment. Meanwhile Leapotswe contributed water and fresh fruits, keeping the kids hydrated and healthy as they worked.
Additionally Women Against Rape provided much-needed shade cover offering a cool and comfortable area for participants to rest and relax between activities. The Trans group also supplied some snacks adding to the fun and excitement of the day.
As the day came to a close it was time to announce the winners of the various activities. The children who excelled in litter picking and crafting with plastics were recognized for their efforts with exciting prizes. The celebration of their achievements was a heartwarming moment as each child was applauded for their dedication to the environment. The awards were not just a recognition of the children's hard work, but also a reminder of the collective effort needed to protect our planet.
The Planet vs. Plastics Earth Day celebration was a day to remember. Not only did the children have a blast playing games and learning about sustainability, but they also left with a deeper understanding of the impact plastic pollution has on the world. By combining fun with education (two key pillars of our Coaching Conservation ethos), the event inspired the next generation of environmental stewards.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers, and participants who made this event possible. Together, we are taking small but significant steps toward a cleaner, greener planet. Let's continue to work together to reduce plastic waste and make every day Earth Day!
