Ministry of Education validates Coaching Conservation Programme after week long school observations

In June 2025, the Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation (DCDE), under the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education (MCWBE), conducted a week-long field validation of the Coaching Conservation Programme in the North-West Education Region.

From 23–27 June 2025, a team of DCDE officers visited five primary schools (Samochima, Chukumuchu, Shakarawe, Chanoga, and Matsaudi) to assess the programme, and to evaluate its suitability for expansion to other regions. Using focus group discussions with learners, questionnaires with teachers, and direct classroom and field observations, DCDE undertook a comprehensive review of programme delivery, methodology, materials, and outcomes.

The findings were overwhelmingly positive. DCDE confirmed that the Coaching Conservation is in clear alignment with Botswana’s primary school curriculum. Learners demonstrated increased knowledge of wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation challenges, alongside improved confidence, teamwork, empathy, and respect for self, others, and the environment.

Teachers reported noticeable positive behaviour change among learners, including improved environmental responsibility, active participation in class, and greater curiosity about conservation and biodiversity.

DCDE further confirmed that CC strongly supports national education priorities, including environmental education as outlined in the Revised National Policy on Education and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4.7. Learners not only acquire knowledge but actively apply values and behaviours linked to sustainable living, making the programme a valuable complement to formal classroom teaching.

This validation marks an important milestone for Coaching Conservation, reaffirming its role in nurturing conservation-minded, confident, and responsible young citizens while strengthening Botswana’s education system through meaningful partnerships.
