SHAKAWE PLAY IT FORWARD WINNERS: A Day of Learning and Adventure

The Play It Forward program took an exciting turn as students from Mohembo Primary School and Gudigwa Primary School traveled to Shakawe for an unforgettable day of adventure and learning. For many of these students, especially those from remote areas like Gudigwa, it was their first time visiting Shakawe. The excitement was palpable as they boarded the boat, ready for a day filled with new experiences and knowledge.

The adventure began with a boat ride along the Okavango River, one of the most picturesque and unique ecosystems in the world. The students, eyes wide with wonder, took in the beautiful landscape, marveling at the sight of the river's flowing waters and the diverse wildlife that inhabits it.

As they cruised along the river the students were treated to an engaging lesson about elephants delivered by the dedicated Coaching Conservation coaches. The boat ride itself provided a perfect backdrop for the lesson with crocodiles lazily swimming nearby offering the students an unforgettable view of the river’s inhabitants. The sight of these majestic animals in their natural habitat made the lesson come alive sparking curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the wild.

After the insightful elephant lesson the students had the chance to unwind with some fun games on the boat. These games provided a much-needed break from learning and gave the students an opportunity to bond and enjoy each other’s company. It was heartwarming to see how the games brought the students together.

The boat cruise also offered the students a chance to explore the Okavango River from a unique perspective. With breathtaking views of the river’s shores and the surrounding wildlife, the students were able to see firsthand the beauty of one of Botswana's most treasured natural wonders.

For our coaches the outing was just as special. It was their first time being on a houseboat and they were impressed by how the boat setting provided a unique and memorable way to deliver lessons to the students. The coaches were equally inspired by the students' enthusiasm, curiosity, and eagerness to learn about wildlife conservation.

The Play It Forward program’s focus on environmental education allows students to connect with nature in a way that classroom lessons alone cannot offer. Through experiences like these students gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems.

The Shakawe Play It Forward outing was a perfect example of how experiential learning can create lasting memories and inspire the next generation of conservationists. As we continue to expand the Play It Forward program, we look forward to more opportunities to engage students in hands-on learning, exploring the beauty of the natural world, and fostering a passion for wildlife conservation.

For all the students who took part in this adventure, the memories of the boat ride, the elephants, and the laughter will stay with them for years to come, inspiring them to protect and cherish the wildlife and environments that are such an integral part of their world.
